Chapter 6 — The Dou Family
Purple Streets of Chang'an Page 3 of 3
After Dou Yaocheng's death, Dou Huancheng took the young Dou Duo to his own side, helped him manage his property, personally taught him letters and learning, and when he had seen him marry and establish himself, handed the estate over to Dou Duo without the slightest discrepancy. After his death he left a testament: "East Dou and West Dou are one family, divided in dwelling but not in lineage."
Dou Duo held his uncle in deeper memory than his own father. He regarded Dou Huancheng as a father, and his cousins as full brothers. When his son Dou Huaiying was born, the boy was ranked together with the "Shi"-generation brothers of the East House, to show that the two houses were one and would never be parted.
Thus although Dou Zhiwei's father was an only son, he was called the Seventh Master.
And the one called the Third Master was Dou Zhen, eldest son of Dou Yan's second granduncle.
