Chapter 1127 — Are You Out of Your Mind? An Jianwen Had Come Into Money and Been Through Woman After Woman, Virgins Among Them, Yet His Heart Was Never Really In It—He Still Liked Gu Mengyao Best

The Blossom Guardian

Childhood sweethearts—ah, how hard they are to forget! An Jianwen found that he liked Gu Mengyao more and more.

"Uncle Chu, it's An Jianwen!" Once out of the underground arena, An Jianwen got into his Ferrari and called Gu Pengzhan's mobile.

"Oh? Jianwen. What is it?" Gu Pengzhan asked indifferently. He had never thought much of An Jianwen, and that business of profiting from another man's misfortune had sent his opinion of the young man plunging.

"Uncle Chu, where are you? I'd like to come and pay you a visit..." said An Jianwen.

"I'm at the office, not finished yet. A visit won't be necessary. If there's anything, say it over the phone." Gu Pengzhan's attitude was plain enough: he did not wish to meet An Jianwen.

Rejected outright, An Jianwen was instantly displeased. He cursed inwardly: Gu Pengzhan, you old bastard—if Wei Zhao hadn't shown his teeth last time, the Gu Group would have been finished long ago. Still at the office, are you? Go home and sit there!

"Heh heh. Nothing really. It's just been a while since I saw Uncle Chu, so I thought I'd send my regards." On the surface An Jianwen remained courteous. He had never torn the mask off with the Gu family, so it hardly mattered that Gu Pengzhan disliked him.

"Is that so. Then thank you," Gu Pengzhan said flatly. "I have things on hand right now. If there's nothing else, shall I hang up?"

"Uncle Chu, the truth is I really did want to help you last time. You didn't agree to my terms, but I was still working quietly behind the scenes, ready to step in—who'd have thought Wei Zhao would recover his strength so quickly... heh heh, so I was just a step too late... I hope you won't hold it against me. After all, my own situation wasn't too good back then..." An Jianwen explained.

"I know. I don't blame you," Gu Pengzhan said, his tone as calm as ever.

"All right then. I won't disturb you any longer, Uncle Chu. I wish you a smooth day's work!" An Jianwen hung up, thoroughly vexed. He had meant to visit Gu Pengzhan and then go with him to Gu Mengyao's villa. Now that hope was dashed. If he wanted to see Gu Mengyao's villa, he would have to go alone.

Neither Wei Zhao nor the Young Mistress had expected An Jianwen to turn up at a time like this. When the Gu family had run into trouble, An Jianwen had seized the moment to press for Gu Mengyao's hand in marriage. That much Wei Zhao knew, and so did the Young Mistress.

Wei Zhao had not gone after An Jianwen last time because, detestable as the man was, he had done nothing that truly harmed the Gu family; and afterward An Jianwen had gone into hiding, so Wei Zhao had simply paid him no mind.

"Yao Yao, it's been so long—you're lovelier than ever!" An Jianwen held out the roses in his hand to Gu Mengyao.

Gu Mengyao frowned. Loathsome as she found him, she took the flowers all the same and passed them off to Xiao Shu beside her. "Xiao Shu, they're for you!"

"Oh!" Shen Yushu took the roses, then, beaming, carried them over to Wei Zhao and held them out. "Brother Arrow, for you!"

"Heh..." Wei Zhao took the flowers, glanced at the livid look on An Jianwen's face, and let a cold smile flicker at the corner of his mouth.

In every clash with An Jianwen, Wei Zhao had held the upper hand. So long as the man did nothing too far out of line, Wei Zhao would not do anything to him—especially since he had a vague understanding of An Jianwen's background.

An Jianwen alone was nothing. The crux of it was the Fire Wolf Gang behind him. As things stood, Wei Zhao did not want to make too many enemies for the Gu family. The matter of the Xiao family was still unsettled; if the force behind An Jianwen jumped in as well, it would mean trouble.

Wei Zhao himself was fine—at worst he could pick himself up and walk away, back to Xixing Mountain Village, where Old Man Wei and Er Gou Dan were; anyone who came would die. But the Gu family could not. If Wei Zhao left, what would become of the Young Mistress and Xiao Shu?

An Jianwen had always wanted Wei Zhao dead, but he had never once succeeded. Wei Zhao was simply too strong. Even when An Jianwen had Master Li the boxer at his side, he had not dared to go head-to-head with him. Was Ma Zhu formidable? And had Wei Zhao not left him a cripple?

So An Jianwen could only swallow his fury, pretend he did not care, and say with a smile, "What's this, Yao Yao? Aren't you going to invite me in to sit?"

"Oh—please come in..." Gu Mengyao was a polite girl. Vexing as she found him, she still remembered the friendship between them from childhood, so she stepped aside and let An Jianwen into the villa.

Once inside, however, she gave him no pleasant looks. She simply sat with Shen Yushu and went on watching television.

When An Jianwen saw the cartoon on the screen, he nearly lost his mind.

It was not the sort of thing he cared to watch, and they had no common ground over it. Even if he wanted to say something to Gu Mengyao, there was nothing they could talk about.

"Hahaha..." At some scene on the screen, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu burst out laughing, delighted.

An Jianwen frowned. Was that so funny? But for Gu Mengyao's sake he could only grit his teeth and force himself to keep watching. He knew that unless the two of them finished the cartoon, they would never deign to talk with him; and if he interrupted them now, he would be scolded.

After watching a while, he still could not get into it. If anything was amusing, it was that the characters were drawn a little comically. Then, when some strange cartoon figure appeared, An Jianwen finally burst out laughing too...

Yet even as he laughed, he began to feel something was wrong—because neither Gu Mengyao nor Shen Yushu was laughing. He was the only one.

Under Shen Yushu's murderous glare, An Jianwen cut his laugh off with a strangled "gak" and looked at the two of them awkwardly.

"What are you laughing at? Are you out of your mind?" Shen Yushu asked.

"Uh..." An Jianwen was embarrassed and lowered his head.

At last the cartoon ended and the Young Mistress switched off the television. Only then did An Jianwen seize his chance. "Yao Yao, the May Day holiday is coming up soon. Do you have any plans? Are you thinking of going somewhere?"

"I was planning to go." Gu Mengyao more or less understood what he was after—most likely, An Jianwen wanted to invite her and Shen Yushu out for the May Day holiday.

"Haha, you're going too? What a coincidence—I was planning a trip myself. Why don't we go together? My father runs a travel agency in Donghai City; he can arrange a private jet for us!" Inviting Gu Mengyao out was the whole purpose of An Jianwen's visit.
