Chapter 698 — Top-Tier Good News: "Where Do You Want to Go?" Gu Mengyao Asked
"How about we go home and play hide-and-seek?" Shen Yushu suggested.
"Hide-and-seek? Don't tell me you're in heat and want to get stuck in the fence again so Wei Zhao can cop a feel?" Gu Mengyao shot the proposal down. There was only so much room at home; the occasional game of hide-and-seek was fine, but play it often and it lost all its charm.
"Fine, fine, then you tell me what we should play." Shen Yushu steered the conversation elsewhere, not a hint of a blush, as though Gu Mengyao hadn't been talking about her at all.
"How should I know? Maybe we go home and play on the console." Just hearing Shen Yushu talk about video games a moment ago had left Gu Mengyao rather in the mood to play.
"Ooh, yes, yes!" Shen Yushu nodded; she was happy to play whatever there was to play.
The two were still talking when Shen Yushu's phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID, saw it was her brother, and hurried to answer: "Brother!"
"Little Shu, where are you?" Chen Yutian's voice came down the line.
"Sister Yaoyao and I are at the hospital. Brother, is something the matter? If not, come keep us company and play games!" Shen Yushu said.
Hearing that the two of them were inside a hospital, Chen Yutian froze on the spot, convinced they had fallen ill. But then Shen Yushu spoke of playing games, which made it plain enough that nothing was wrong, so he didn't ask any more questions. He said directly: "An Jianwen drank too much last night, fell asleep on the street, and a criminal syndicate cut out one of his kidneys. If you and Yaoyao have nothing on, come see him? We're at First People's Hospital now, Ward 218 in the Third Inpatient Building."
"Holy crap!" Shen Yushu's eyes went wide, then she clapped her hands and cheered: "Wow, Sister Yaoyao, let me give you the best news ever! An Jianwen had a kidney cut out — he's just like Zhong Yongliang now! Every one of your suitors is so unlucky — they've all had their kidneys cut out!"
Chen Yutian was sweating buckets. His little sister was simply too much. Even if she didn't like An Jianwen, there was no need to cheer about it so brazenly. If An Jianwen heard her, wouldn't he just die of fury? Thank goodness he was far away, and An Jianwen couldn't hear what was being said on the phone.
"An Jianwen? Kidney cut out?" Gu Mengyao stared blankly. Though she showed nothing of the delight Shen Yushu had, neither was she especially sad. Her bond with An Jianwen had drifted ever further apart; the feeling of the boy next door from childhood was gone for good.
Gu Mengyao shook her head. Sure enough, once people grew up, they could never go back to the way things were.
"Little Shu, you and Yaoyao ought to come and see him, surely? Whatever else he may be, An Jianwen was a friend once, and we all got along well enough." Chen Yutian said.
"Oh, alright — Sister Yaoyao and I don't have anything to do anyway, so we might as well go take a look at him. Could be fun too!" After a moment's thought, Shen Yushu agreed.
Chen Yutian rather didn't know what to say. Fun? An Jianwen had had a kidney cut out — was that fun?
Still, toward this mischievous little sister of his, Chen Yutian had no way of his own. The old master at home doted on her rotten, treating her as the treasure of the whole family; and from a certain angle, his little sister really was quite adorable.
"Sister Yaoyao, we've got somewhere to play! Let's go to the hospital and see An Jianwen — his kidney got cut out, it's so funny!" Shen Yushu hung up the phone and said to Gu Mengyao: "Tell me, do you think Brother Arrow did it?"
"Wei Zhao?" Gu Mengyao was slightly taken aback. Could it be Wei Zhao? Why would Wei Zhao cut out An Jianwen's kidney — because of what happened at dinner yesterday, when An Jianwen came after her and declared himself? That seemed impossible. Wei Zhao didn't even like her; why would he go and cut out An Jianwen's kidney? It would almost make sense if she herself had ordered it — but she hadn't ordered him to do any such thing...
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu told Gu Pengzhan that they were going to First Hospital to visit An Jianwen. Gu Pengzhan wasn't comfortable letting the two of them go out alone; the coma business had only just been put to rest, and he had become the proverbial bird that flinches at the mere twang of a bow. In the end he had Uncle Qing drive the pair over.
In the car, Shen Yushu phoned Wei Zhao: "Brother Arrow, where are you?"
"I'm at First People's Hospital." Wei Zhao took Shen Yushu's call right in front of Tang Yun. Since Tang Yun already knew about what lay between him and Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, there was no longer any need to hide it.
"Oh, how perfect! Sister Yaoyao and I are heading to First People's Hospital to see An Jianwen too — come with us!" The moment she heard that Wei Zhao was also at First People's Hospital, Shen Yushu lit up with delight and cried.
"Visit An Jianwen?" Wei Zhao blinked. But then it struck him: chances were the fellow had had a kidney cut out! Which meant his kidney must have been transplanted into Zhong Yongliang — would that even be a match?
"That's right, An Jianwen's kidney got cut out!" Shen Yushu said gleefully. "Hurry over and protect us in person — what if An Jianwen goes berserk and punches me and Sister Yaoyao!"
Wei Zhao was somewhat lost for words. An Jianwen had had a kidney cut out — where would he find the strength to hit anyone, let alone beat the two of them? Still, Wei Zhao knew Shen Yushu's temper well enough, so he said: "Alright, give me a call when you get here."
"Okay! We'll be there any minute — just wait for us at the entrance of the Third Inpatient Building!" Shen Yushu said.
Once Shen Yushu had hung up, Wei Zhao saw Tang Yun watching him, and smiled: "Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu are coming to visit a patient and want me to go along."
"Oh, go on, then — there's nothing left to do here." Tang Yun had meant to go shopping with Wei Zhao once they left the hospital. The weather was getting hotter and hotter, and she wanted to buy a pair of shorts; she had planned on the night market street, but obviously that was out for today.
"Ha — if something comes up, I can come back later?" Wei Zhao caught the way Tang Yun seemed about to speak and then hold back, as though she had something she wanted to tell him.
"Mm, we'll see about the time then..." Tang Yun's heart gave a little leap of joy, and she said.
Wei Zhao took his leave of Tang's father and mother, stepped out of the ward, and made for the Third Inpatient Building. Down below the building, he spotted Uncle Qing's Bentley pulling up at that very moment.
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu got out of the car hand in hand. Shen Yushu waved at Wei Zhao; the young lady merely gave him a cool glance, which counted as a greeting.
Wei Zhao knew what was knotting the young lady's heart and didn't hold such things against her. Smiling, he said: "You're coming to see a patient and didn't even bring a gift?"
"Oh, we ought to celebrate! Shall I go buy some firecrackers?" Shen Yushu thought it over and said, perfectly serious.
Shen Yushu's words actually got a laugh out of Gu Mengyao: "Come on — even if you are happy, you can't exactly set off firecrackers. You'd better spare your brother a little face!"
