Chapter 576 — Her Face Is Ruined
The excavator driver and the bulldozer driver were dumbstruck too, and for a moment they did not dare go on! After all, they had only been hired by Zhong Fabai; when it came to forced demolition, Zhong Fabai and Young Master Bing were there to stand behind them — but if people died, they would not escape blame either!
Zhong Fabai was stunned as well. He had not expected Tang Yun to be so reckless as to charge into the house. Was the girl out of her mind?
Zhao Qibing, Jin Gubang, and the bodyguard had come for the spectacle, but they had no sooner arrived than they heard Mother Tang shrieking that someone was dead, which gave them a bad fright. When Zhao Qibing saw Tang Yun lying in a pool of blood, her face smashed out of shape, he frowned and cursed inwardly. Such a pretty little thing, finished just like that? Even if she lived, she would not be beautiful anymore. What a waste.
"Let's go! We'll come back in a few days!" Seeing that someone had been hurt, Zhao Qibing knew there would be no talking today, but he had achieved his aim of making an example of them. Surely, after the scene they had witnessed today, the next time they came to discuss the demolition, these stubborn slum dwellers would not dare to open their mouths so wide and demand the sky.
"You're not going anywhere! Everyone, help me stop them, quick! Who knows how Yun'er is doing — they can't leave, they're murderers!" Seeing Zhao Qibing and his men about to flee, Mother Tang panicked and began to scream.
But Zhao Qibing and the others climbed up onto the bulldozer and simply drove it forward. The residents of the shantytown wanted to block them, yet not one dared step up! After all, these people dared to tear down houses and crush people — what was running over another one or two to them?
Seeing someone itching to have a go, Zhao Qibing shouted, "Whoever isn't afraid to die, come on up! Never mind these stubborn curs — anyone who comes, I'll run them over!"
Zhao Qibing was so overbearing that even those who had been itching to move did not dare to anymore. Everyone fears death, and against a man like Zhao Qibing, who did not fear a corpse, how would they dare provoke him?
And so Zhao Qibing and his party quickly left the shantytown, leaving only Mother Tang clutching Tang Yun and weeping. The house had been smashed down; there was no way in, and she had no idea whether her Old Tang was all right.
Someone had already called the police and the ambulance, but it was the fire engine that came first. The firefighters broke open the half-demolished house and pulled Tang Jucheng out.
Seeing that only Tang Jucheng's legs had been crushed, Mother Tang breathed a sigh of relief. He could still speak when they carried him out, though he was gritting his teeth, sweating cold from the pain. Mother Tang had no time to comfort him; she held her daughter and waited for the ambulance.
Then the ambulance and the police cars arrived. Mother Tang hurried her daughter into the ambulance, and Tang Jucheng was carried into another one. The two ambulances screamed off toward the hospital.
After Zhao Qibing and his men had left, Zhao Qibing gave the bulldozer driver and the excavator driver a sum of money and told them to run first. The two were frightened as well, and took the money and fled. Zhao Qibing himself was not afraid — whatever happened, it could all be pinned on the two drivers.
"Uncle Zhu, follow those two. Make it look like an accident. Get rid of them." Once the two drivers had gone, Zhao Qibing said quietly to the middle-aged bodyguard at his side.
"Yes, Young Master Bing." The middle-aged man called Uncle Zhu said no more. He turned and went after the two drivers in the direction they had gone.
With a death on their hands — if indeed there was one — Zhao Qibing would naturally not allow the evidence to point at himself, so the only way was to pull up the roots with the weeds. He was not even sure whether anyone had actually died.
Zhao Qibing had already had Uncle Zhu kill a great many people, so he felt not the slightest guilt. Laughing and chatting with Li Erlan, Zhong Fabai, and Jin Gubang, he hurried back to the Qibing Building.
The Qibing Building was the office headquarters of Qibing Real Estate, which Jin Gubang and Li Cihua had put up together some time ago, and today it was officially completed. And that very evening, Zhao Qibing held a completion ceremony for the Qibing Building, feasting a number of the distinguished young men of Songshan City. The venue was the banquet hall in front of the building.
Once the Qibing Building was completed, this banquet hall would operate as a restaurant open to the public, and would also serve as the staff canteen for the building's employees.
Tang Yun and Tang Jucheng were taken to the hospital. By the time they arrived, Tang Yun had already woken, which set Mother Tang's mind at ease; and after the doctors examined her, it turned out that Tang Yun had only a gash on her forehead, with nothing else wrong. But the wound would need stitches and would leave a scar. She could never again be as pretty as before; if she could avoid frightening people, that would already be quite something.
Tang Jucheng, however, had both legs broken. After he was admitted, they put the legs in casts; nothing else was seriously wrong. But Tang Jucheng, who had only just been able to stand, would now have to lie in bed again.
In truth, that Tang Yun and Tang Jucheng had come to no serious harm was already a blessing among misfortunes. Yet no sooner had Mother Tang breathed her sigh of relief than she began to fret again! Their house had been torn down; they would have no home anymore. What were they to do?
And now her daughter's face was ruined; she had lost even the means to bargain with Zhao Qibing. Would anyone still want her daughter? So Mother Tang fretted. She had been counting on her daughter's face to land a rich husband, and now — nothing was left at all.
Yet it never once crossed Mother Tang's mind to go and demand medical fees from Zhao Qibing, for the memory of how hard it had been to get medical fees for Tang Jucheng was still far too fresh. She had no hope whatsoever that Zhao Qibing would compensate them.
Tang Yun lay with her head wrapped in gauze, staring dully at the hospital ceiling. Would she never be pretty again? Was she going to turn into an ugly monster? True, when she had once met those villains who lusted after her beauty, she had been angry at her own looks, wishing she could be plainer and not be harassed. But women are born to love beauty, and she did not want to become an ugly monster either.
Wei Zhao... would he still like her? At the thought that Wei Zhao no longer wanted her, the tears came despite herself. Before, she had still had the means to compete with Feng Xiaoxiao; but now? Her face was ruined. Wei Zhao probably would not want her anymore.
"Yun'er, don't be sad. The doctor said that if it heals well, there won't be too big a scar." Mother Tang had come into the ward at some point. Seeing her daughter weeping silently, her heart broke.
"Mom..." Seeing her mother, Tang Yun could hold back her feelings no longer and burst into loud sobs. "Mom, why is our family so unlucky? Why! What right do they have to tear down our house? What right?"
"Ai!" Mother Tang took her daughter's hand and sighed deeply. "Yun'er, it's I who have ruined you!"
