Chapter 328 — Why Her Again?

The Blossom Guardian

"Ah! You're one of my dad's men?" Xie Jinbiao was stunned for a moment, then a flicker of delight crossed his face. "Since when did my dad have such a badass man working under him? That's awesome!"

Wei Zhao could not help rolling his eyes. How was this Xie Jinbiao just as thick-headed as his old man? He gave a cold snort. "Your father could beg to be my underling and I still wouldn't take him."

"Ah..." Only now did Xie Jinbiao fully understand: this man before him was not his father's subordinate at all, but a hired expert his father had brought in to rescue him. At once his manner turned respectful. "Big brother, I'll do whatever you say!"

Wei Zhao found it amusing. The boy was a classic rich brat — when he thought Wei Zhao worked for his father, he had been insufferably cocky; now that he knew otherwise, he was all fawning flattery.

Wei Zhao could not be bothered with him, though. Getting him back to the country would settle the job; in exchange for his father's shares, the mission would be complete.

What a simple job this was — not a shred of challenge to it! Wei Zhao shook his head and walked with Xie Jinbiao toward the gate of the repair shop. They had not gone far, however, when a jumble of shouts and clamor reached their ears.

"Grab him! Don't let him get away! Kill him..."

Bang... bang... Several gunshots rang out, followed by the screams of men and women alike. It was clear both sides must have taken casualties.

Wei Zhao frowned. Had someone else besides him broken in here? That thief from before should have been long gone by now, so the people they were chasing could not possibly be him. And there was no way that thief had a gun.

Tonight was lively enough, all right — this little repair shop had drawn three separate parties.

"Ah! Big brother, what do we do? Have they found us? What should we do? They've all got guns..." Xie Jinbiao had heard the shouting too, and his legs went weak with fright; he nearly collapsed on the spot.

"Quiet! It's not us they've found, it's someone else." Wei Zhao shot the fool a glare and said sourly, "Just follow me and keep your mouth shut. And don't go gawking around."

"Oh, oh! I know, I understand!" Xie Jinbiao nodded hurriedly. "Big brother, you'll protect me, right?"

"Keep chattering like that and when we're spotted, I'll run for it myself and leave you here to die." Wei Zhao gave another cold snort, ignored Xie Jinbiao, and walked on.

Xie Jinbiao wanted to say more, but Wei Zhao's icy words had frightened him into silence. He followed cautiously behind.

At a time like this, the more chaos the better for Wei Zhao. Everyone's attention was fixed on the intruder, and no one paid the slightest heed to men like him and Xie Jinbiao, who were plainly dressed as members of the Water Blue Gang.

So Wei Zhao led Xie Jinbiao calmly toward the gate, and sure enough, no one stopped them.

Xie Jinbiao's heart was in his throat. He had none of Wei Zhao's composure; cold sweat poured off him. These were real blades and real guns, killers who did not blink — how could he not be afraid?

Suddenly Wei Zhao frowned. The sounds behind them were drawing closer; it seemed the intruder was running in this direction. Wei Zhao was speechless for a moment, then said to Xie Jinbiao, "Move faster, they're coming this way!"

"Oh... oh!" Xie Jinbiao nodded again and again, quickening his pace alongside Wei Zhao.

Bang... A gunshot, a scream — and the scream was a woman's voice...

"You two brothers up ahead, stop that girl! Quick!"

A loud voice rose up behind Wei Zhao. He had no choice but to halt. If he kept walking on without a backward glance, the men behind him would most likely shoot without hesitation.

If he had been alone, Wei Zhao was absolutely confident he could dodge the bullets behind him and slip away. But now he had a burden at his side — he could get out, but Xie Jinbiao could not. Wei Zhao had earlier bluffed about abandoning him and running, but now that it came down to it, he truly could not leave the man behind. To dump him here would be to forfeit Xie Guangbo's shares entirely.

"Don't talk. Do as I do." Wei Zhao gave Xie Jinbiao this one instruction, then turned around — and saw a figure in black night-clothes lying not far from his feet. This must be the intruder who had been shot. He had not expected her to be a woman.

Wei Zhao pretended to move in and seize the intruder, and walked over to the black-clad figure...

"Hey, brother, take a look at how this chick looks!" The leader of the pursuers who had come up behind him called out to Wei Zhao, his face lewd, his tongue flicking over his lips.

Wei Zhao crouched down — and froze. He wanted to curse aloud. For the girl lying on the ground was none other than the cool chick he had met that very day!

"..." Wei Zhao did not know what to say. This girl kept turning up in front of him, kept bringing him trouble, and had even repaid his kindness with enmity.

Honestly, Wei Zhao truly wanted to leave her here and be done with it. But in the end she was an Easterner too, and there was a certain fate between them — to run into her twice in this faraway little blue city was a rare thing indeed.

Wei Zhao was not a man who liked sticking his nose into other people's business. In fact, Wei Zhao was the sort who hung up high when a matter did not concern him. But this cool chick counted as someone he knew, and beyond that, there was the fellowship of the same sect! If he ignored her and left her here, her chances were surely grim.

One look at the gleam in the eyes of those pursuers was enough to tell how much danger the cool chick was in.

"Running into you must be the worst luck of eight lifetimes!" Wei Zhao drew a deep breath, suddenly reached out and snatched the pistol from the cool chick's hand, then aimed it at the leader of the pursuers and fired.

A direct hit to the brow — the leader dropped to the ground, no doubt about it.

With one arm Wei Zhao tucked the cool chick under his armpit, with the other he grabbed Xie Jinbiao by the collar, and ran at full speed toward the gate of the repair shop!

In truth, Wei Zhao had merely played on the element of timing, catching the Water Blue Gang pursuers off guard so that they suffered a silent loss.

Wei Zhao had pretended to be a member of the Water Blue Gang, helping the pursuers block the cool chick. So in the minds of the men chasing behind, they had naturally taken Wei Zhao for one of their own, and their initial tension had faded. In their eyes, the cool chick's capture was already a foregone conclusion. So when they saw Wei Zhao crouch down, the pursuers instinctively lowered their guns — holding them up was pointless now. It was a subconscious gesture.

They would never have imagined Wei Zhao would suddenly explode into motion and become their enemy! So Wei Zhao's shot caught them completely off guard.
